Good morning, I’m Zhou Shuxuan, with the Massage Parlor Outreach Project. I will speak in Mandarin first, then English, and Tien will interpret the statements into Vietnamese.

Our vigil will start in three minutes. We have some chairs at the front for folks who need them. We also have banh mis from ChuMinh Tofu and the Eggrolls, who are our beloved partners in this work. Please see someone with a yellow PARISOL hoodie if you need help during the vigil.

We also set up places to light incense and write letters of love and support for the community who’ve lost loved ones in the Atlanta shooting in 2021, and in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay January of this year.

Hi everyone, my name is Josh Hou. In 2021 when the Atlanta shootings happened, I wrote a piece of music to honor the lives we lost. This year, on the second anniversary, I'd like to perform it for you all to remember not just the lives lost in Atlanta, but also those at Half Moon Bay, Monterey Park, and others. On clarinet is Jahnvi Madan, on cello Alex Chuang. As we play, I want to invite you to open our program to page 3, where there are the names of the victims. As we read their names, we continue to send our love to them, their families, and other survivors as we remember them months and years later. By being here, we are honoring their legacy as community members and healers.

Today is the second anniversary of the Atlanta shootings, and our third vigil. Two years later, much has happened. In just the last three months alone: anti-Asian violence continued with an unprovoked bus stabbing in Indiana, our Asian American community was rocked by two mass shootings Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay, and U.S. media is awash with breathless reports of the fearsome Chinese balloon, yet again stoking anti-Asian sentiment. And last fall, across the Pacific, the A4 Movement blossomed.
These incidents are far from disconnected. Each one is but an occurrence in a system of capitalist exploitation throughout the global economy. This system that creates unlivable and dehumanizing conditions that workers try to escape through migration, leaving home for new opportunities, only to find the same (albeit morphed) exploitative system, this time with fewer resources and support, laced with challenges in acculturation, racial violence, and discrimination.
This system of exploitation does not uniquely target the Asian community. We have seen capitalist systems result in a violent, racist police force that terrorizes the Black community, resulting in the horrific murder of Tyre Nichols earlier this year. We’ve seen that same oppressive system murder Tortuguita, a queer Indigenous Venezuelan protesting Cop City in Atlanta. Our movements are connected.
So, two years later, why do we gather? What purpose does this grief hold, compounded year after year by more violence, more oppression? We gather here to honor and love those that we have lost. We gather to remind ourselves why we organize and to listen to the cries of those most impacted in our community. We gather to remember their voices that galvanize us to fight to change the culture and conditions that continue to inflict violence on our communities.
And so today, on the second anniversary of the Atlanta shootings, let us come together, hold each other in love and care, and renew our commitment to abolishing exploitative and carceral systems, to build new systems of care and love.

Magandang umaga po. Good morning.
My name is Kalayo Pestano and I am Co- Director at API Chaya. I’ve also been a long time collaborator and supporter of the Massage Parlor Outreach Project. Thank you for inviting API Chaya to speak, as we hold in our hearts the lives that were taken on this day two years ago. We may not have known them, but they are kin. They are community. They are a part of us.
All of us here and many others will never forget that day and the tumultuous feelings of shock, sadness, fear, hopelessness and rage that followed, feelings that still exist for us today. In the work of responding to trauma and tragedy, we must take the time to be with each other as we acknowledge and express these feelings. This too, is part of honoring their memory. So I am grateful for MPOP for making this space possible and for the chance to be with all of you in our grief.
At API Chaya, we support survivors of intimate partner violence, sexual assault, human trafficking and other forms of exploitation and abuse. Our services are free, confidential and culturally responsive, including case management, safety planning, emotional support, legal services and therapy. We also organize in our communities to prevent violence, partnering with community groups and working on projects like MPOP to ensure that we reach those who need our support. If anyone here has experienced these forms of violence, please know we are here for you. We do this work as survivors who are from the communities we serve and we are committed to our communities surviving, healing and building a loving and abundant future.
Last week, we held our annual vigil to commemorate the lives that were taken from us from a shooting at the King County courthouse 28 years ago. Susana Remerata, who was pregnant at the time, was a survivor of domestic abuse. On that day, she was at the courthouse in divorce proceedings with her two friends, Phoebe Dizon and Veronica Laureta and they were killed by Susana’s estranged husband. I bring their names with me today, because like Daoyou Feng, Xiaojie Tan, Suncha Kim and the others who were targeted at the massage parlors, the violence that caused their deaths stems from the same destructive systems of patriarchy, global capitalism and white supremacy. These systems devalue the lives of immigrant and migrant women, women whose invisibilized caring labor keep our communities afloat. It is our responsibility to hold up these women and others like them, and share their stories as we do our part to keep each other safe. And in keeping their memories alive, we strengthen these bonds between us, these networks of care and histories of defending our people– these are our shared legacies of resistance.
On that note, I want to share this chant and invite you all to chant with me. In tagalog, the word Mabuhay means “long live”. Let’s practice– when I say “Mabu-mabu-mabu, you all say Hay Hay Hay! And when I say “Mabuuu- you say “Haaay!”
Mabuhay to all immigrant and migrant workers!
Mabu-mabu-mabu! Hay Hay Hay!
Mabuhay to all those whose caring labor support our people! Mabu-mabu-mabu! Hay Hay Hay!
May the memories of those who were taken from us long outlive the systems that perpetuate this violence.

So at 12th and Jackson we are a group of organizers at ChuMinh Tofu who organize every Sunday from 10 to 12:30 to give out and donate meals. And so all of these meals are donated by Tanya and her family and her staff. We chop the veggies, and Tanya and her family and her staff all cook the meals. And so Tanya and the organizers set an example for care and support for people in our neighborhood.
And Tanya and the organizers set a foundation for our work, in that we’re able to get to know each other in this space, and get into conversations, and get into organizing around alternative to community safety in our neighborhood.
In that people want alternatives to community safety – its just that we see we live in conditions of neglect, and under resourcing, and manufactured scarcity.
And we see that with tragedy - patriarchy, isolation, and inferiority - it manifests itself as violence against women.
In that we can see that we can only save ourselves, and no one is going to come out of parachute to come save us for us.
We have been getting into conversations around community safety in our neighborhood. Getting into conversations with business owners, community members, unhoused people alike. And we hear that people are going through a hard time, and understandably so. And people want alternatives to community safety. Its just that the alternatives to community safety only consist of punishment and policing. And we’re hearing that people want alternatives.
That is why we are here today. In that our collective work with MPOP is an alternative.
It is an alternative and a choice to bring people in, instead of push people out. It is an alternative and choice to trust, instead of push people out. And it is an alternative and a choice to support the oppressed and not the oppressor.
When we make choices together, we exercise our power.
And when we help each other choose, we exercise our power.
And when we help each other, we build trust.
And when we learn how to protect each other, we build our own safety.
Funny thing about death is that when we love - it brings us together.
And when we love the people who die, it connects us even more. We despair, but we also love.
The more connected we become, the more we will lose.
I would rather feel deeply and have these connections. And lose them. Than not at all.

Good morning. My name is Emi Koyama and I am with the Coalition for Rights & Safety for People in the Sex Trade. I also helped to start Massage Parlor Outreach Project with others here.
People often conflate massage work done by migrant Asian workers with sex work. I want to be clear that not all Asian massage workers engage in sex work. Far from it. But because there is an overlap, all migrant Asian massage workers, and in fact all Asian women and migrant women, are stigmatized by anti-sex worker bias, ever since the days of the 19th century Chinese Exclusion Act and the Mann Act, the first federal anti-prostitution law that was one of the reasons FBI was created.
The overlap also demonstrates the impact of global economic inequities, punitive immigration system, traditional gender roles, and lack of labor rights protections, along with the ingenuity and resilience of migrant Asian workers. Combined societal biases toward immigrants, Asians, Asian women, and people associated with sex trade, whether or not one is actually involved in it, result in violence, workplace harassment, economic exploitation, and police raids and arrests that disjoint and displace our communities.
I was recently reading an autobiography of Frederick Douglass, who escaped Slavery in the U.S. South and became one of the most outspoken slave abolitionist activists in the 19th century. In it, he complains how white abolitionists, his allies in the North, demand that he speaks only about his suffering under enslavement and leave analysis and philosophy to white people. I think in many ways people who claim to want to "rescue" migrant Asian women from sex trade do the same thing: they want to act as saviors of unfortunate "other" while refusing to hear their voices.
We need to be different. We need to listen to and amplify the voices of people who actually perform this needed labor, and experience and manage risks and stigma associated with it. I hope Massage Parlor Outreach Project, through its brand new Worker Center, will be able to do just that.
